What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Bottle size against your batch

A standard home brew batch of around 23 litres fills roughly 23 of the one-litre bottles here, or about 46 of the 500 ml ones. Litre swing-tops mean far less capping and cleaning; half-litre bottles mean you can open one without committing to the lot.

02

Swing tops and spare gaskets

Bottle conditioning builds real pressure inside the glass, and the rubber gasket in a swing top is what holds it. Gaskets harden after a season or two, so buy a brand that sells replacements — a leaking seal is flat beer, not a broken bottle.

03

Clear glass and light strike

Every bottle in this top ten is clear glass. Beer exposed to daylight develops the skunked aroma within hours, so clear bottles have to live in a box, a cupboard or a dark cellar. For kombucha, oil or cordial that hardly matters, which is why these listings sell across all of them.

04

Cleaning before sanitising

Bottles need the residue out before a sanitiser can do anything, and dispense lines need a dedicated cleaner like the 5 litre purple indicator fluid at rank 3, which shows you when the flush has run clear. A straining funnel keeps hop debris and sediment out of the bottle in the first place.

05

Crush, if you brew from grain

The grain mill at rank 10 is the only entry that touches the brew itself. Milling your own grain lets you control the crush and buy malt whole, which keeps far longer than pre-crushed — relevant only if you have moved beyond extract kits.

06

Price per bottle, and price movement

Work everything back to a per-bottle figure: the twelve-pack here is dearer per bottle than the six-pack from the same brand. Prices in this category also move violently — three listings shifted by 77% or more during the observed period, so a snapshot price is not a stable one.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there almost no brewing kits in this ranking?

Because the revenue in this Amazon.co.uk subcategory sits with bottles and consumables rather than fermenters. Starter kits sell too, but either below our review and rating threshold or in other subcategories. Eight of these ten are bottle packs, and that is a genuine finding about where the money goes, not a gap in the data.

Are clear swing-top bottles alright for beer?

They work, but light is the enemy: beer in clear glass picks up a skunked aroma from daylight surprisingly quickly. Condition and store the bottles in a closed box or a dark cupboard and it is a non-issue. For kombucha, cordial, oil or vinegar the colour of the glass barely matters.

How many bottles do I need for one batch?

For a typical 23 litre batch, plan on about 23 of the one-litre bottles or roughly 46 of the 500 ml ones, plus a few spare. Most of these packs contain six, so a full batch means buying four to eight packs — which is why the per-bottle price is the number to compare.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only products with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. Several volila listings share one pooled review count across their sizes, so their ratings are not independent of one another.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
