What matters when buying
Bottled, filtered or neither
Three formats sit side by side here. A filtered countertop unit fills from the tap and needs cartridges. A bottled cooler needs 15 litre or 5 gallon bottles delivered and stored. A pump just moves water out of a bottle you already have. Choose the supply chain first, the machine second.
Chilled only or ambient too
The Hydrate Direct coolers dispense ambient and cold from separate taps; the Aqua Optima is a chiller. If the unit only serves cold water you are still boiling a kettle for tea, which matters more in an office than at home.
Countertop or floor-standing
An 8.2 litre countertop chiller eats worktop depth and plugs in next to the toaster. A floor-standing cooler needs a footprint of its own plus room to swing a full 15 litre bottle overhead when it runs dry. That bottle change is the part people underestimate.
Capacity against how much you drink
8.2 litres in a tank, 15 litres in a bottle, or roughly 19 litres in a 5 gallon jug. The tank size decides how often you refill, and the bottle size decides how heavy the refill is — a full 15 litre bottle is about 15 kg lifted to shoulder height.
Sanitising and cartridge costs
A bottled cooler needs periodic sanitising, and this ranking prices that honestly: the package with the sanitisation kit costs £54 more than the one without. A filtered unit needs cartridges instead. Neither running cost is in the headline price.
Check it is not just a stand
