What matters when buying
Clamp-on or plumbed in
The BRITA ON TAP V grips the spout you already have and takes five minutes; the Qettle replaces the tap, needs a boiler in the cupboard and, for most people, a plumber. Between £19.99 and £645 there is nothing in between in this top ten, so decide which side of that line you are on first.
Check it filters anything
Two entries here are replacement cartridges and one is a bare brass faucet designed to dispense water from a reverse osmosis unit you must already own. A tap-shaped photograph in this subcategory is not proof of a filter, and none of those three will improve your water on their own.
What is under the sink
A boiling water tap needs a boiler roughly the size of a small kettle in the cupboard, a socket to run it from and the mains hot and cold feeds within reach. Measure the cupboard and find the socket before you fall in love with the spout, because that is what turns a fitting into a job.
Cartridge interval, not tap price
The clamp-on BRITA is sold in four-month terms; the Philips cartridges are rated at 1,000 and 1,200 litres; the countertop unit claims 8,000 gallons. Over five years the refills for an on-tap filter cost several times the £19.99 housing, which is the number that actually decides this purchase.
Boiling water in a family kitchen
The Qettle taps are sold as true boiling rather than the 98 degrees that many instant taps deliver, which is the point if you want it for tea. It also means genuinely boiling water at handle height, so the child lock and the handle action are worth as much attention as the finish.
The countertop escape route
If you rent, or the cupboard is full, the Waterdrop sits on the worktop and connects to the spout without touching the plumbing. You pay for it in worktop space and a hose across the sink, but it is the only option here that filters properly and moves house with you.
