What matters when buying
Lid or open bowl
An open bowl is easier to tip out but a gust across a balcony empties it over the table. Six of the ten here have a lid, which is the single feature that decides whether an ashtray can be left outside at all.
Ceramic, steel or silicone
Ceramic holds heat and sits still but chips on a hard floor; stainless steel survives being knocked over; silicone bends instead of breaking and is the cheapest way to cover a garden table. Melamine sits in between and is what venues buy in packs.
Where it lives — table or wall
A wall-mounted ash bin keeps butts off the ground at a doorway or pub garden and is emptied weekly, not daily. A desktop tray is a different purchase entirely, so decide the location before the design.
Cigarette rests and depth
Shallow decorative bowls have nowhere to park a lit cigarette, and a deep windproof body hides how full it is. Look at the number of notches in the rim against how many people will be using it at once.
Smell containment
Cold ash is what makes a room smell, not the smoke. A closing lid, described here as smell proof on several models, is what keeps that inside — an open tray needs emptying after every session.
Emptying and cleaning
Tar bakes onto a glazed ceramic surface and needs soaking; silicone peels clean and takes a dishwasher. If the ashtray is for a rental, a garden or a business, weigh the cleaning routine above the look of it.
