What matters when buying
Cobbler or Boston
A cobbler is one body with a built-in strainer and a cap — pour, shake, pour out. A Boston is two tins that need a separate strainer, which is what bars use because it seals harder and comes apart faster. Both are in this top ten and the choice changes how the kit is used, not how good the drink is.
Capacity against the round
750 ml and 800 ml bodies dominate here, and 25 oz on the American listings is the same thing in different units. One 750 ml shake produces two or three drinks; a smaller shaker means shaking twice when someone else wants one.
Piece count versus useful pieces
A 23-piece kit is a shaker plus a great many pourers, picks and stoppers. The tools that get used are the strainer, the jigger, the spoon and the muddler — four items that the £13.99 three- and six-piece sets here already cover.
Where the kit lives between drinks
The 23-piece sets come with an acrylic stand, the three-piece sets come with nothing. A stand keeps the tools upright and visible on a worktop; without one the kit goes into a drawer and half of it is never found again.
Steel grade in the listing
304 and 18/8 are the same specification and both are named in titles on this page. A listing that states no grade at all is not automatically worse, but under £15 it is the detail worth looking for — this is equipment that spends its life wet and full of citrus.
Boxed or plain, same drink
One entry here is priced for presentation and one is a £239 capsule machine that makes the drink for you. If you are buying to actually mix, the plain £14 to £18 kits do the same job as the boxed ones and leave the money for the gin.
