What matters when buying
Joke label or cellar tag
Two unrelated products share this heading. A prescription label with a bag is a greetings card shaped like a bottle; a pack of 200 neck tags is cellar stationery. Eight of this top ten are the first kind, and they are bought for the laugh, not for the wine.
Adhesive or hang tag
A stick-on label has to survive a chilled, sweating bottle and then peel off the glass afterwards. Neck tags hang loose, fit any bottle shape, and can be rewritten — which is what you want if the bottle is going into storage rather than straight onto a table.
Whether the bag is included
Most novelty entries here bundle a bottle bag, and that is a fair share of the £5 to £8 they cost. The plain single labels at £3.49 are label only, so if the bottle is the whole present you still need something to wrap it in.
The occasion is printed on
A 40th, a 60th, a new baby, a teacher thank-you: the wording is fixed, not chosen. Buying the wrong age is the commonest way to waste four pounds in this category, because the listings differ by that number and nothing else.
Label size against bottle shape
A label cut for a 750 ml still wine bottle creases on a prosecco bottle, which has a longer sloping shoulder and a smaller flat area. Only one entry here prints its dimensions — 12 by 8.5 cm — so check the photo against the bottle you intend to give.
Can you write on it, and read it later
Cellar tags earn their keep only if pencil or permanent marker stays legible a year later in a cool rack. Uncoated card takes both; glossy stock repels them and smudges. For a 200-tag pack that matters far more than the colour.
