What matters when buying
Still wine or sparkling
These are two mechanisms, not two sizes. A still-wine stopper is a plug that sits in the neck; a sparkling stopper clamps under the lip and holds pressure in. Three of the ten listings here are sparkling-only, and they will not seal a claret bottle.
Sealing or removing the air
A stopper keeps the wine in. A pump takes the air out, which is the part that dulls an open bottle. Two listings here are actually pumps and one is a pack of spare pump valves — the dedicated pumps have their own page.
Pourers and aerators
Both sit in the same hole in the bottle neck and do different things. A pourer stops the drip running down the label; an aerator forces air through the stream as it comes out. Only one listing in this top ten is a pourer at all.
Neck sizes are not universal
Still-wine stoppers are cut for a standard wine neck. Sparkling bottles have a thicker lip that a plug cannot grip and a clamp needs. If you drink both, you need one of each rather than a compromise.
Singles, sets and spares
The pack size decides the real price. The kuou two-pack works out under £4 a stopper, the Le Creuset is £20 for one, and the Vacu Vin six-pack is spares for a pump you must already own.
Argon is a different budget
At £399.99 the Coravin never removes the cork: it pushes argon in through a needle so the bottle can sit for months and still pour a glass. Everything else here assumes you finish the bottle within days.
