Comparison 2026 · 10 products · Amazon.co.uk

The strainer decides what stays in the shaker.

We analysed the Amazon.co.uk subcategory Cocktail Strainers and kept only listings with at least 200 reviews and 4.3 stars — just 24 products qualify, which makes this one of the smallest nodes on the site. The ten below are ordered by estimated monthly revenue, and that revenue falls away fast: rank 1 turns over around £520 a month while ranks 4 to 9 shift roughly one unit.

What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Hawthorne, mesh or both

A Hawthorne with its coiled spring sits on the shaker tin and holds back ice and fruit. A conical fine mesh is a second-stage filter for the shards and mint fragments the spring lets through. Two of the ten here are mesh, not Hawthorne, and they are not interchangeable.

02

Spring density and fit

The coil does the work: a loose spring passes ice chips, a hundred-coil spring holds them. It also has to sit tight against the rim, so a strainer that fits a Boston tin may rattle in a narrow mixing glass.

03

A spring that comes off

Citrus pulp and mint collect under the coil, and on most strainers you cannot get at it. A spring that unclips for washing is the most practical feature in this list, and it is on the strainer that outsells everything else here.

04

Prongs and rim contact

The prongs stop the strainer sliding into the tin while you pour at an angle. Four is the usual number; fewer means holding it down with a thumb through the whole pour, which is fine once and tiring over a party.

05

Plated finishes

Copper and gold strainers are plating over steel and are chosen to match a bar set. They meet acidic juice and ice on every serve, so treat the colour as decoration and expect bare steel to age more gracefully.

06

What you already own

Every product on this page is a single strainer. Cocktail shakers frequently have one built into the cap, so check the drawer before adding a second Hawthorne — the gap in most home kits is the fine mesh, not the spring.

Frequently asked questions

What does a cocktail strainer actually do?

It sits over the shaker or mixing glass and holds back ice, fruit and herbs while the drink pours into the serving glass. Without one, the ice you shook with lands in the drink and carries on diluting it.

Do I need a Hawthorne and a fine mesh?

For a Negroni or an Old Fashioned the Hawthorne alone is enough. For anything shaken with citrus, egg white or mint, bartenders pour through the Hawthorne and a small conical mesh at the same time, which is called double straining. Both types appear in this top ten.

Why is a tea strainer in the list?

Amazon assigns products to category nodes, and a three-piece conical tea strainer set has ended up filed under cocktail strainers. We label it rather than quietly remove it, because it is part of what this category actually returns.

How was this ranking created?

The order comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not from star rating and not from bestseller rank. Only listings with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included, which leaves 24 products in this node. Revenue drops from about £520 at rank 1 to nothing at rank 10, so the lower half of this table is a very thin market.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
