What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Litres against bottles, and ice

Capacity claims assume the tub is packed with bottles and nothing else. In practice ice takes up around half the volume, so a 6.5 litre tub is a handful of bottles and a 13 litre one is a small party. The 25-bottle claim at rank 1 is a bottles-only figure.

02

Emptying it when the ice goes

Ice becomes water within an hour or two indoors, and an open tub with no drain has to be carried to a sink while full. If the tub lives on a table or a wooden deck, plan for lifting it out, or choose a size you can actually pour away one-handed.

03

Insulated cooler or open tub

Only one entry here is an insulated cooler; the rest are single-wall plastic, acrylic or galvanised steel. An open tub looks better and serves faster, but the ice is gone in a couple of hours on a warm day. Insulation buys time, at the cost of hiding the drinks.

04

Clear or opaque

Half of these are deliberately transparent, because a visible tub of bottles on ice is part of the display at a party. Galvanised steel hides the meltwater and the labels facing the wrong way, and it will not scratch or craze the way acrylic does after a few seasons.

05

Handles and the weight when loaded

A 13 litre tub filled with bottles and ice is heavy and awkward, and thin plastic handles are the first thing to fail. Check the tub is carried from moulded side grips rather than a clip-on handle, especially if it has to travel to a garden or a beach.

06

Single tub or pack of two

Four of these listings are the same brand in two sizes, each sold singly and in twin packs, and the per-tub price moves a long way between them. Two smaller tubs also beat one large one if you want beer at one end of the garden and soft drinks at the other.

Frequently asked questions

What size tub do I need?

Work on roughly half the stated volume being ice. A 3.5 litre tub holds about two bottles on ice and suits a dinner table, 6.5 litres covers a handful of drinks, and 13 litres is the size for a party of ten or more. For a garden full of people, two mid-size tubs beat one big one.

Why do four listings look almost identical?

Ranks 2 to 5 are Lifewit tubs in 6.5 and 13 litres, each sold as a single and as a twin pack. They share a pooled review count of 412 to 414, so the ratings are not independent — and the per-tub price ranges from £16.50 to £22.99 across them.

Why do the last entries show no sales?

Ranks 8, 9 and 10 are US listings carried by third-party sellers, with bestseller ranks between 1.1 and 2.6 million and no measurable UK revenue in the period. Their review counts were earned elsewhere. Only fifteen products in this subcategory clear our filter at all, so they still make the list.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only products with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. In a subcategory this small, revenue is the only figure that separates a stocked product from a dormant listing.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
