What matters when buying
Smoker kit or shaker set
This subcategory holds two unrelated products. A whisky smoker chars wood chips over a glass of bourbon and is bought as a gift; a shaker set is the working kit for making cocktails. Five of the ten here are smokers, and if you actually want to make an Old Fashioned rather than perfume one, you want the shaker.
The torch comes without gas
Every torch-based kit in this ranking states that butane is not included, because pressurised gas cannot be posted with the product. Budget for a butane refill and remember it has to be bought locally — or take the electric smoker at rank 5, which needs no fuel at all.
Count the useful pieces
Piece counts in this category are marketing arithmetic: a 14-piece kit counts each pour spout and every small strainer. Look for the four things that matter — shaker, strainer, jigger, muddler — and treat everything above that as packaging.
Shaker capacity and type
A 750 ml or 26 oz shaker makes two drinks at once; anything smaller means shaking twice for a round. Cobbler shakers with a built-in strainer are easier for a beginner, Boston tins are faster but need a separate Hawthorne strainer, so check which one is in the photo.
Glasses and stones, or ice
Two bundles here are glasses with reusable stones rather than tools. Stones chill without dilution, which some people want and others hate, because whisky is usually meant to open up with a little water. It is a taste decision, not a quality one.
Gift box or working kit
Most of these are sold on the box: gift wrap, presentation cases, wording aimed at fathers and boyfriends. If it is for your own bar, that packaging is dead weight and a bare jigger at £3.50 like the one at rank 6 does more work than a 14-piece case.
