What matters when buying
Place settings, not pieces
A 12-piece and an 18-piece set can seat the same people or half as many again, depending on how the pieces are split. Divide the price by the number of settings before comparing: in this ten that figure runs from under £6 a head to about £85.
What counts as a setting
Most sets here give each person a dinner plate, a side plate and a bowl. Only the 60-piece MALACASA and the 16-piece Maison & White include cups, so a set that looks complete in the photo can still leave you drinking from odd mugs.
Porcelain or stoneware
Porcelain is thinner, lighter and almost always white; stoneware is heavier with a thicker glaze, which is where the matte and reactive finishes here come from. Weigh a stack of six stoneware dinner plates in your mind before committing a high shelf to them.
Dishwasher and microwave wording
Nearly every listing on this page states dishwasher and microwave safe, so the claim tells you little on its own. Check it on the exact colourway you are buying rather than on the range, because reactive and metallic glazes are where the wording changes.
Can you replace one plate
Sets from large ranges such as Denby or Amazon Basics can be topped up piece by piece years later. A one-off box from a smaller seller usually cannot, so one breakage means a mismatched table or a second full set.
