What matters when buying
Bore width, not length
Five millimetres is a cocktail straw for a spirit and mixer, six is the everyday size, eight goes through a thin smoothie, and half an inch is what a tapioca pearl needs. All four widths appear in this top ten, and a straw too narrow for the drink is simply unusable.
Single use or washed up
The paper straws here work out at 3p to 4p each and go in the food waste. Steel and glass cost from 46p to 64p each and come back out of the washing-up. The break-even arrives quickly; the real question is whether they will actually get cleaned.
Length against the glass
The reusable straws here are 21 to 23 cm, the cocktail straws are 12.5 cm, and a 40 oz tumbler needs its own longer replacements. Measure the tallest glass in the cupboard first, because a straw that sinks below the rim is a fiddle every single time.
The brush is not an accessory
A 6 mm reusable straw cannot be cleaned by rinsing, and milkshake residue sets hard inside it. Four of the reusable sets in this list include one or two brushes; where a set does not, budget for one and check the brush count against the number of straws.
Hot drinks and what conducts
Metal passes heat straight to the lip, so hot drinks are worth checking rather than assuming. One listing here states hot and cold explicitly, another names hot drinks among its uses, and paper is not built for a long hot drink at all.
Price per straw, not per pack
A 250-pack at £7.39 and a four-pack at £9.99 look similar on the search page and differ by a factor of about eighty per straw. Divide before comparing, and remember that disposables are a repeat purchase while reusables are not.
