Five millimetres is a cocktail straw for a spirit and mixer, six is the everyday size, eight goes through a thin smoothie, and half an inch is what a tapioca pearl needs. All four widths appear in this top ten, and a straw too narrow for the drink is simply unusable.
The paper straws here work out at 3p to 4p each and go in the food waste. Steel and glass cost from 46p to 64p each and come back out of the washing-up. The break-even arrives quickly; the real question is whether they will actually get cleaned.
The reusable straws here are 21 to 23 cm, the cocktail straws are 12.5 cm, and a 40 oz tumbler needs its own longer replacements. Measure the tallest glass in the cupboard first, because a straw that sinks below the rim is a fiddle every single time.
A 6 mm reusable straw cannot be cleaned by rinsing, and milkshake residue sets hard inside it. Four of the reusable sets in this list include one or two brushes; where a set does not, budget for one and check the brush count against the number of straws.

Paper is cheap, compostable and softens in a long drink. Stainless is durable and the usual choice for smoothies, but it carries heat and cold straight to the lips. Glass looks best and lets you see whether it is actually clean, at the highest price per straw in this list. Reusable plastic is the compromise: light, cheap and quiet against the teeth.
