What matters when buying
Thirty centimetres of shaft
A mixing glass or a Boston tin wants roughly 30 cm of shaft so your knuckles stay out of the drink and the bowl still reaches the ice at the bottom. Six of the ten here are 30 cm or longer; the 22 cm and 19 cm entries are not bar spoons however they are listed.
Spiral shaft or smooth
The twist is not decoration. It lets the shaft turn between finger and thumb while the bowl traces the wall of the glass, which is how a stirred drink is chilled without churning the ice. A smooth handle has to be gripped and pushed instead.
What is on the other end
This is the only real difference across the Barfly variants here: a teardrop weight for balance and for pouring a float over the back, a muddler head for mint and sugar, or a fork for lifting a garnish. Pick the end you will actually use.
Plating or plain steel
Copper and gold titanium finishes cost between £1 and £3 more than the identical plain spoon in the same range — and in one case here the plain one is dearer. It is a colour choice, and the plating is what shows wear at the bowl over time.
One spoon or a pack
Three listings on this page are packs of six or twelve short spoons — for long drinks, lattes and iced coffee. They are excellent value per spoon and no help at all when you are stirring a Negroni in a mixing glass.
Bowl shape for layering
A bar spoon has a small, shallow bowl so a liqueur can be poured over the back of it and float on what is underneath. The long drink and iced spoons in this ranking have an ordinary teaspoon bowl, which does not do that job.
