Clean kit before the brew, or nothing else matters.

We analysed the Amazon.co.uk subcategory Cleaning & Sanitising Devices, part of the home brewing section, and kept only listings with at least 200 reviews and 4.3 stars — just 12 qualify. The ten below are ordered by estimated monthly revenue, and two of them have nothing to do with brewing at all.

What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Cleaner or sanitiser

They are two different jobs. A cleaner shifts the yeast film and the sugar residue; a sanitiser deals with what is left on an already clean surface. VWP and the Bigger Jugs powder claim both in one tub, ChemSan is a sanitiser. Buying two sanitisers and no cleaner is the classic first order.

02

No-rinse or rinse-off

A no-rinse product stays on the fermenter and the bottles, which saves a step and avoids putting unsterile tap water back onto sterile equipment. Anything you have to rinse hands the last word back to your tap. Two of the four chemicals here say no rinse in the title.

03

Powder or ready-mixed liquid

A 400 g tub of powder makes far more solution than a one litre bottle and costs less than half as much, but you weigh and mix it yourself. The litre bottle is ready the moment you open it, which is worth something at the end of a long brew day.

04

Brush length against the vessel

A demijohn or a tall bottle needs a brush that reaches the base — 17 inches on the single brush here, less on most of the multipack pieces. Check the neck diameter too: a brush head that will not pass the neck is no use however long the handle is.

05

Bottles or beer lines

Bottle brushes and steriliser powder do nothing for a draught line. If you have taps on a keg, that is a separate kit with a pressurised bottle, and it is the £59.99 listing at rank 8 rather than anything else on this page.

06

Read what the product actually is

This subcategory is only twelve listings deep once the filter is applied, and two of the ten below are a make-up brush mat and a table crumb brush. Amazon has filed them here; that does not make them brewing equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cleaner and a steriliser?

A cleaner removes the visible residue — the yeast ring, the sugar film, the beer stone. A steriliser or sanitiser acts on the clean surface that is left. Sanitiser applied over dirt does very little, which is why the combined cleaner-steriliser powders in this list are the simplest starting point for a home brewer.

Do I have to rinse after sanitising?

It depends on the product, and the titles say so. The no-rinse products here are designed to be left on the equipment. Rinsing them off with ordinary tap water puts back exactly what you have just removed, so if a product says no rinse, take it at its word.

Why is a make-up brush mat in a brewing category?

Because Amazon has placed it in this node, and it clears the filter on reviews and rating. Rank 9 is a silicone make-up brush mat and rank 10 is a table crumb brush. We flag them rather than editing the list, so you can see how thin this subcategory really is.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only listings with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included, which in this subcategory leaves just twelve candidates.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
