What matters when buying
Taste filter, not a purifier
Every genuine filtering bottle here is sold against chlorine, taste and organic impurities in mains water. None of them is a microbiological purifier, so they are the wrong tool for stream water, a well or a tap you have been told to boil. That distinction is the single most important thing on this page.
Where the filter sits
BRITA puts a MicroDisc in the lid or the straw, so the water is filtered as you drink rather than while it stands. That means no waiting, but also that a slow disc turns into a hard suck. Check that the bottle is sold with spare discs, because the disc is the part you keep buying.
Squeeze or rigid
The Active is a soft, squeezable bottle for running and cycling; the rest are rigid ones for a desk or a bag. A squeezable bottle pushes water through the disc for you and fits a bike cage, a rigid one survives being dropped in a rucksack. They suit genuinely different days.
600 ml is the whole category
Every real filtering bottle in this top ten holds 600 ml, and the two 750 ml entries are cold-brew bottles with no water filter in them. If you want a litre of filtered water on the move, this subcategory does not have it — you are back to filling from a jug at home.
Discs per box, and how often
The BRITA listings include two MicroDiscs and the Aquaphor pack states 150 litres; none of them puts a week count on the label. Work out roughly how much you drink from the bottle, because a disc used twice a day at a desk is exhausted far sooner than one used at weekends.
The lid is what goes furry
A filter bottle has a wet disc sitting in a warm lid all day, and that is where smells and slime start rather than in the body. Look for a lid that comes apart, and be honest about whether you will take it apart every few days — otherwise buy the plain bottle and filter at home.
