What matters when buying
Steel cooler or foam sleeve
A vacuum-walled steel holder keeps a can cold for the length of a garden afternoon and costs around £25. A neoprene sleeve slows the warming down and costs around £3 a can. One is an object you look after, the other is four you can afford to lose.
Can size is not a detail
Sleeves are cut to a size: 12 oz for the standard 330 ml can, 16 oz for the tall 440 and 500 ml ones. A tall can in a short sleeve leaves the top third bare, a standard can in a 16 oz sleeve rattles around. Both sizes are in this list and they are not interchangeable.
Cans only, or bottles too
The six steel entries here are sold as can and bottle holders that also work as a plain tumbler, so one object covers a beer, a cider bottle and a gin and tonic. A neoprene sleeve is a can sleeve and nothing else.
The opener, and whether it stays put
The Huski listings include a detachable 3-in-1 opener. That is genuinely useful at a barbecue where the bottle opener disappeared an hour ago, and it is exactly the sort of part that goes missing if it is not clipped back on.
Condensation on the table
A cold can sweats and leaves a ring. Neoprene soaks that film up, while insulated steel stays dry on the outside because the cold never reaches it. If the cooler lives on a wooden table rather than in a cool box, that is the difference you notice first.
Packing it away
Four sleeves roll into a jacket pocket and weigh nothing, which is why they sell for picnics and festivals. A steel cooler takes up the space of a pint glass in the bag and wants washing by hand, so it suits a garden better than a rucksack.
