What matters when buying
Trolley or tote
Four of this top ten roll. A trolley takes the weight off your arms and holds 42 to 57 litres, but it has to live somewhere folded and it has to get up your steps. A tote weighs nothing and stores in a coat pocket.
Litres and the load limit
Capacity and carrying capacity are two different numbers. Only one listing here quotes a load limit at all, the 30 kg on the Hoppa at rank 10, and 57 litres of tins weighs a great deal more than 57 litres of cereal boxes.
Two wheels or six
Two large wheels roll smoothly on the flat and bump up kerbs one at a time. The tri-wheel clusters on the VOUNOT rotate as they meet a step, which is what to look for if the shopping ends at a staircase rather than at a car boot.
Bulk blanks are not shopping bags
The two multipacks here, 25 bags for £26.99 and 10 for £9.95, are blank cotton canvas at 145 gsm sold for printing, embroidery and giveaways. Excellent value per bag, and aimed at market stalls rather than at a household that needs two.
Insulation, or none
Chilled shopping is the reason to pay more here. The trolley at rank 3 is insulated, the Trolley Bags set includes one cool bag out of three, and the rank 1 bestseller does nothing but insulate a single bottle. Everything else is a plain fabric carrier.
Lid, pockets and strap
A secure lid is what stops a full trolley emptying itself at a kerb, and a shoulder strap is what carries it up a flight of stairs when the wheels stop helping. Both 57 litre Hoppa entries have the lid; the pockets matter mainly for keys and a phone.
