What matters when buying
Measure the pan, not the old lid
Cookware diameter is the outside of the rim at the top, and that is what every lid here is sold against. Measuring the old lid instead adds a few millimetres and lands you in the wrong band.
Universal lids come in bands
A universal lid is a stepped dome that rests inside a range of diameters: 24 to 28 cm here, 20 to 30 cm there, 33 to 38 cm for the big pans. Four of this top ten work that way, and three of them are the same Walfos lid in three different bands.
System lids fit one range only
The Tefal Ingenio set and both Instant Pot lids fit their own cookware and nothing else, which is why they are sold by model and pot volume rather than by centimetres. If you own the system, buy the system lid; if not, it is the wrong £48.
Glass, steel or dome
Tempered glass lets you watch a sauce without lifting anything and dominates this ranking. Steel is lighter and survives being dropped but shows you nothing. A melting dome is a third thing altogether, made to trap steam over a burger on a flat griddle.
The silicone rim does the work
On a universal lid the heat-resistant silicone rim is what seals against three different diameters and what keeps glass off metal. It is also the part to look at when a lid rattles or sits proud instead of settling.
