Two, three and four-tier stacks all appear here. Every extra tier adds height rather than base area, and the steam reaching the top basket has already passed through everything below it — which is why the fourth tier on the Crystals costs only £4 and is best used for the thing that needs least cooking.
The Judge range alone comes in 16, 18 and 22 cm, and the price difference across those three is £8.23. Measure the ring you will actually use: a 22 cm base on a small ring heats unevenly, a 16 cm tower on a large ring wastes half the burner.
The Salter plugs in, holds 7.5 litres over three tiers, comes with its own rice bowl and leaves every hob ring free. The other nine occupy a ring for the twenty to thirty minutes the food takes. If the hob is the bottleneck at dinner time, that is the whole argument.
The second-placed Judge is a stepped colander that drops into a pan you already own, and it fits most 16, 18 and 20 cm pans. At £17.99 it costs less than a tower and stores flat, but it steams one layer only — there is no second tier to add.
The Harcas bamboo basket absorbs condensation instead of letting it drip back onto dumplings, which is why dim sum is steamed in bamboo. It needs liner paper, hand washing and drying. The steel towers go in the dishwasher and outlast it, but water collects on the underside of the lid.
A vented glass lid lets you watch without lifting and letting the steam out; the Judge and Denny entries both name one. Cool-touch handles matter more here than on ordinary pans because you lift a full basket off a boiling base, and almost every steel entry here names an induction-ready base.
