The tall sloping lid is the whole point of the shape: steam rises, condenses on the cone and runs back down the inside wall rather than dripping onto the food. That is why tagine recipes start with almost no added liquid, and why a flat casserole lid is not a substitute.
The aluminium pots here weigh a fraction of the cast iron ones and cost £59 to £73; the Staub and Kook cast iron bases run £63 to £120 and hold heat far longer once hot. If it goes from hob to table and back to the cupboard weekly, weight is not a detail.
Five entries pair a metal base with a glazed ceramic or stoneware cone. Handle that lid as crockery: it is the part that chips, it does not like a sudden temperature change, and it is rarely sold on its own if you break it.
Traditional unglazed clay tagines need a diffuser and a gentle flame. Nothing in this top ten is raw clay — every listing here names induction, all hobs or oven use, which is the single biggest practical difference between these and the tagine you might have brought back from Morocco.
Six of the ten are 28 cm and 4.1 to 4.2 litres, which is the family size. The Staub 20 cm and the 3.3 quart Kook are meaningfully smaller. Remember the cone adds height, not capacity, so judge by the litre figure and not by how big the thing looks.
INTIGNIS red and black share reviews but not prices, and the two Kook entries differ by 35p and a glaze name. Decide on size and base material first, then check which colourway happens to be cheap that week — the difference can be £13 for an identical pot.
It returns condensation to the pot. Steam rises into the cone, cools on the sloping wall and runs back down the sides instead of falling onto the food.
