What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Bean-to-cup, pod or pump

Three formats share this table. Bean-to-cup grinds and brews at one press and starts around £300. Pods are cheapest to buy and dearest per cup. A pump machine with a portafilter is the least expensive here at £179.99 but expects you to grind, dose and tamp yourself.

02

How the milk is handled

This is what separates otherwise similar machines. A LatteGo or LatteCrema carafe pours milk automatically and goes in the dishwasher; an Aeroccino is a separate jug on the worktop; a steam wand gives you control and a cloth to wipe after every drink.

03

Cost per cup, not per machine

A capsule machine at £214 looks cheap beside a £490 bean-to-cup until you count the pods. Whole beans cost a fraction of a capsule per cup, so a household drinking four a day pays back the difference and a one-cup-a-day household usually does not.

04

Grinder type and settings

Both Philips machines here state a ceramic grinder and the Ninja has one built in. Ceramic burrs run cooler than steel and hold their setting; the number of grind steps decides how far you can chase a better shot before you run out of adjustment.

05

Descaling and water hardness

In hard-water parts of the UK a bean-to-cup machine needs descaling every few weeks and a neglected one blocks. Check whether it prompts you, whether the tank takes a filter, and what the filters cost, before the machine is on the counter.

06

Footprint, tank and hopper

These are large appliances that live under wall cupboards. Measure the height with the lid open for filling the bean hopper, and match the tank size to your household — a family of four on a 1.8 litre tank is refilling it daily.

Frequently asked questions

Bean-to-cup or capsules?

Bean-to-cup gives fresher coffee and a far lower cost per cup, at the price of a bigger machine and a cleaning routine. Capsules are consistent, tidy and instant, and cost several times more per cup. Both sit near the top of this ranking, so the market clearly has room for both.

Why do two Ninja machines appear back to back?

Ranks 4 and 5 are the same Luxe Premier in black and silver, listed under separate ASINs with identical review counts and a £1 price difference. Amazon treats colours as separate products, so each gets its own revenue estimate and both appear.

Is the £1,938 De'Longhi worth six times the Magnifica?

The data cannot answer that, only show what people do: the Eletta Explore still sells an estimated 158 units a month at that price. What you buy at that level is the milk system, the drinks menu and the build, not a fundamentally different espresso.

How was this ranking created?

The order comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not from star rating and not from bestseller rank. Only listings with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. In an expensive category like this, revenue rewards machines that sell steadily at a high price as much as cheap ones that sell in volume.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
