What matters when buying
The one-way CO2 valve
Freshly roasted beans give off carbon dioxide for a week or more. A one-way valve lets that gas escape without letting oxygen back in — the six Coffee Gator canisters here have one, a plain airtight tin does not. If you buy supermarket coffee that has already degassed, you do not need it.
The date tracker
A dial on the lid that you set to the roast or opening date. It sounds like a gimmick and it partly is, but it is the only thing on any of these containers that tells you whether the beans inside are three days or three months old.
Size it to the bag you buy
900 ml swallows a 250 g bag of whole beans with a little headroom; 1900 ml takes 500 g. A half-empty canister is mostly air, and air is the thing you bought the canister to keep out — buy small and refill often.
Opaque, not clear
Light degrades coffee oils as surely as oxygen does, which is why every sealed container in this list is stainless steel and none is glass. A pretty clear jar on a sunny worktop is the worst place beans can live.
Set price against single price
Two entries here are three-tin sets where £6.99 covers all three, and one is a countertop rack. Divide the set price before you set it next to a £22.99 single canister, or the comparison means nothing.
Caddy or countertop organiser
Keeping pods, cups and sachets tidy is a different problem from keeping beans fresh, and one entry here is a two-tier wooden rack that solves the first and not the second. Decide which problem you actually have before you buy.
