What a cup means here
A percolator cup is a small measure, not a mug. The Stanley in this list holds 1.1 quarts and is sold as six cups, which works out at roughly 170 ml each. A six-cup pot therefore fills two large mugs, not six.
Hob, campfire or plug-in
Every pot in this top ten is a stovetop or open-fire percolator, which is why the listings read like camping gear. Electric percolators brew unattended and switch themselves to keep-warm; a hob pot needs a hand on the heat and someone watching it.
Aluminium in the brew path
A percolator pushes the same water through the stem and basket over and over, so the material of those parts is in contact with boiling coffee far longer than in a drip machine. COLETTI builds its whole pitch on there being no aluminium and no plastic in that path — worth checking on cheaper pots, where an aluminium basket and stem are still common.
The glass knob is a wear part
Two of the ten entries in this ranking are replacement glass tops, and that is not an accident: the see-through knob is how you judge the colour of the perk, it takes the heat, and it is the first thing that breaks. Before buying, check whether a spare exists for your model.
How it comes apart for cleaning
Basket, stem, spreader and lid all have to lift out and go under a tap, because percolated coffee leaves oils on every surface it recirculates over. A pot that only opens at the lid gets bitter fast, and the well that the stem seats into is the part people forget.
Grind and perk time
Percolation re-boils coffee that has already been brewed, so a fine espresso grind and a long perk give you the bitterness this method is blamed for. A coarse grind and four to five minutes, judged by the colour through the glass top, is what these pots are built around.
