What matters when buying
Length before colour
Sizes here run 70, 99 and 152 cm. Measure the working stretch between sink, hob and worktop first: 70 cm covers one standing spot, and only the 152 cm runner covers the whole run you actually move along while cooking.
Thickness and give
The standard Carvapet runner is thin enough to slide under a cupboard toe-kick; the separate 20 mm version is several times thicker and sits noticeably proud of the floor. Thicker cushions more but is easier to catch a toe on.
PVC or memory foam
PVC wipes clean with a cloth and shrugs off spilled oil, which is why it fills this list. Memory foam is softer underfoot but soaks up what you drop on it, so it belongs at a desk more than beside a hob.
Non-slip backing on your floor
A backing that grips tile can still slide on sealed wood or vinyl. If the mat shifts when you pivot from sink to oven it is worse than no mat at all, so check what the underside is made of rather than trusting the words non-slip in the title.
Edge bevel and door clearance
A squared edge is a trip point and catches the vacuum cleaner. It also decides whether the oven or dishwasher door swings clear — worth measuring before choosing the thick version.
Back on the floor in seconds
A PVC surface is back on the floor in seconds; a foam mat with a fabric top has to dry somewhere. In a kitchen where things get dropped, that difference decides whether the mat is still in use in six months.
