What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Double glove or separate mitts

The British double glove is one long strip you drape over a shoulder, with a mitt at each end — quick to grab, impossible to lose one half. A pair of separate mitts frees both hands independently and takes up less drawer space. Most of this top ten is the double, and several listings use both words in the same title, so read the photograph rather than the name.

02

Silicone panels or plain textile

Silicone grip stops a hot tray sliding out of your hands and wipes clean when something boils over. Plain textile grips less well but stays flexible, which matters when you are feeling for the edge of a shelf. Le Creuset sits at the top of this page with no silicone on it at all, so neither approach is simply better.

03

Length up the forearm

The Abbey entry states 91 by 17 cm, and that end-to-end figure is the one worth comparing, because the burn people actually get is on the inside of the wrist against the oven shelf. A short mitt leaves the forearm exposed exactly where it needs cover.

04

Washing, and the wet-glove trap

A damp glove conducts heat straight to your hand — steam does what the fabric was there to stop. Machine washable is standard here, but the practical question is how fast it dries and whether you have a second pair for the hour after a wash.

05

What a temperature rating means

One listing here claims 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Read that as a brief contact rating under ideal conditions, not as permission to hold a roasting tin while you find a space for it. What protects you is the number of layers and the seconds you are in contact, not the figure in the title.

06

Colour is priced separately

Both repeat products in this ranking charge for the finish: the Le Creuset glove is £43.00 in black and £28.68 in red, and the AH Artisan Home double is £3 dearer in grey than in black. Pick the design first, then check what the other colours cost that week — and remember dark colours hide the marks these things collect.

Frequently asked questions

What is a double oven glove?

One continuous strip of padded fabric with a mitt sewn at each end, worn over a shoulder or laid across the forearms. It is the standard British format and dominates this top ten. The advantage is that the middle section protects your forearms when you carry a hot dish; the disadvantage is that it is bulky to store and slow to dry after a wash.

Why does the same Le Creuset glove cost £14 more in black?

Ranks 4 and 7 are the same 4-layered textile double glove, both with 1,242 reviews, differing only in colour: £43.00 in black and £28.68 in red. Amazon prices each colour variant independently and those prices drift with stock. If the colour is not important to you, the cheaper variant is the identical product.

Silicone or cotton?

Silicone grips a wet or greasy tray and wipes clean, which is why most of the cheap entries here have it. Thick cotton, like the 91 cm Abbey glove or the Le Creuset four-layer pair, insulates on layers rather than on surface material and stays flexible. Where silicone fails is thin unlined versions, which pass heat through quickly; where cotton fails is when it gets wet.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only products with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. Note the review counts: the entry at rank 2 sells almost as many units as the leader on 243 reviews, while rank 3 has 6,939 — review volume here tracks how long a listing has existed, not how good it is.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
