What matters when buying
Double glove or separate mitts
The British double glove is one long strip you drape over a shoulder, with a mitt at each end — quick to grab, impossible to lose one half. A pair of separate mitts frees both hands independently and takes up less drawer space. Most of this top ten is the double, and several listings use both words in the same title, so read the photograph rather than the name.
Silicone panels or plain textile
Silicone grip stops a hot tray sliding out of your hands and wipes clean when something boils over. Plain textile grips less well but stays flexible, which matters when you are feeling for the edge of a shelf. Le Creuset sits at the top of this page with no silicone on it at all, so neither approach is simply better.
Length up the forearm
The Abbey entry states 91 by 17 cm, and that end-to-end figure is the one worth comparing, because the burn people actually get is on the inside of the wrist against the oven shelf. A short mitt leaves the forearm exposed exactly where it needs cover.
Washing, and the wet-glove trap
A damp glove conducts heat straight to your hand — steam does what the fabric was there to stop. Machine washable is standard here, but the practical question is how fast it dries and whether you have a second pair for the hour after a wash.
What a temperature rating means
One listing here claims 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Read that as a brief contact rating under ideal conditions, not as permission to hold a roasting tin while you find a space for it. What protects you is the number of layers and the seconds you are in contact, not the figure in the title.
Black costs £14 more
Both repeat products in this ranking charge for the finish: the Le Creuset glove is £43.00 in black and £28.68 in red, and the AH Artisan Home double is £3 dearer in grey than in black. Pick the design first, then check what the other colours cost that week — and remember dark colours hide the marks these things collect.
