Every listing in this top ten is a multi-pack, and the split is exactly five sets of four against five sets of six. Divide before you compare: the same £14 buys six braided mats or four faux leather ones, and the range runs from £2.15 to £7.50 a mat.
Faux leather and vinyl take a damp cloth and are dry by the time the plates are cleared. Braided and cotton-rope mats hold crumbs and sauce in the weave and need a proper wash, which is also when they start to fray. If the table is used by children daily, the wipeable ones win on that point alone.
In this category the claim covers a hot dinner plate, not a casserole straight from the oven. Slate genuinely does not care, faux leather will mark under a hot pan, and woven cotton rope is decor rather than protection. If you serve from the dish at the table, buy a trivet as well.
Round mats at 38 cm suit a round table and look sparse on a long one; the rectangles here are 43 by 30 cm, which is close to a full place setting. Measure the table first — six 43 cm rectangles need 2.6 metres of edge before they stop touching.
Most of these sets bundle a coaster per mat, so a set of six is really twelve pieces and a set of four is eight. It is a fair extra, but it inflates the piece count in the title and it is worth checking whether the coasters are the same material as the mats.
Thin faux leather rolls into a drawer and sits flat again; braided mats curl at the edge once they have been stacked; slate is a few millimetres of stone that needs felt pads underneath and somewhere solid to live. Non-slip backing matters most on a polished or glass table.
