What matters when buying

Six criteria

Felt, clear sheet or quilted pad

Three quite different products share this subcategory. Felt is a soft underlay that disappears beneath a tablecloth; a clear PVC sheet is meant to be seen, so the table stays visible; a quilted vinyl pad with flannel backing is the traditional protector that goes on the bare wood. Only the last two are pads in the strict sense.

Measure the table top itself

A pad is cut to the table, not to the cloth. Measure the top and decide whether you want it flush to the edge or a couple of centimetres short so it stays out of sight. The felt at rank 1 comes in 136 size and colour combinations precisely because tables rarely match a standard cut.

Heat resistance, where it is claimed

This is the reason most people buy a pad at all — a hot casserole dish on a varnished top leaves a white bloom that does not come out. Only two entries here state heat resistance in their titles: the felt underlay and the small silicone mat. A clear PVC sheet is about spills and scratches, not heat.

Under the cloth or on view

If the pad lives under a tablecloth, only thickness and heat behaviour matter and the colour is irrelevant. If it is the visible surface, you are choosing between transparent PVC that shows the wood and a leather-look pad that covers it entirely. That decision changes which half of this ranking is even relevant.

Inches and centimetres in one list

Half of these listings are sized in inches, half in centimetres, and several are US imports. 52 x 70 in is about 132 x 178 cm; 42 x 84 in is about 107 x 213 cm. Convert before comparing, or you will order something a foot short.

How thin the category is

Only 39 listings passed the review and rating filter, and seven of the ten below record no estimated sales at all, with bestseller ranks between one and two-and-a-half million. What is a table pad actually for?

It sits between the table top and the tablecloth to take the heat from serving dishes, absorb the noise of plates and stop spills reaching the finish. That is a different job from a trivet, which handles one hot pan, and from a worktop saver, which is a chopping surface for the kitchen counter.

Why do most of these show no sales?

Because the ranking reports estimated monthly revenue, and seven of these ten had none in the observed period. Their bestseller ranks are above a million, which usually means the listing is dormant, out of stock or shipping slowly from abroad. Is a clear PVC sheet the same thing as a table pad?
