What matters when buying
Table size plus the drop
Measure the table top, then add twice the overhang you want. Everyday use is 20 to 30 cm on each side, so a 90 cm wide table wants a cloth about 140 cm wide — which is exactly why so many listings here are 140 cm across. For length, a 180 cm cloth suits a 120 to 140 cm table, and 240 to 300 cm is for an extended one.
Wipe clean or wash
PVC oilcloth takes four of the ten places here because it deals with children, coffee and Sunday lunch without a wash cycle. The trade-off is that it feels like plastic, creases in storage and cannot be ironed. Fabric drapes better and irons flat, but every spill becomes laundry.
Household cloth or event cover
Three entries in this ranking are not dining-room cloths: a two-pack of stretch covers, an eight-pack of white banquet cloths and a 70 by 126 inch black one. All are cut for 6 ft trestle tables. If you are dressing a hall or a marquee they are the cheap way in — on a normal dining table they will not fit.
Fitted stretch or loose drape
