What matters when buying
Length against your table
The two lengths that dominate here are 143 cm and 180 to 183 cm, and they are not interchangeable. As a rule the runner should either finish a hand's width inside the table ends or hang 15 to 30 cm over each end — anything between the two looks like a mistake. Measure the table before you look at patterns.
Finished runner or fabric by the roll
Two of these top ten are 20 and 25 metre rolls of satin and organza, 29 cm wide, sold for chair sashes. They work out at 56p and 33p a metre, which is far cheaper than any finished runner — but the ends are raw, so you are cutting and hemming for every event.
Width and the centrepiece
Everything here sits between 29 and 33 cm wide. That is enough to carry candles and a low centrepiece down the middle while leaving room for place settings on a standard 90 cm table. On a narrow 75 cm table the same runner leaves very little clear space either side.
Macramé and tassels
Five of the six real runners here are macramé or tasselled cotton in the boho and farmhouse look, and sage green appears three times. Tassels are the part that catches on chair backs and tangles in the wash, so check whether the listing allows machine washing before choosing a fringed design for everyday use.
Cotton, jute or foil
Cotton and cotton-linen wash and iron and last all year. Jute and bamboo give the rustic texture but shed and do not like being wet. Metallic foil is decoration for one evening and is not made to be laundered. The material tells you whether this is table linen or party décor.
