What matters when buying
Aluminium or plastic
The metal plates work because aluminium moves heat out of the room and into the food far faster than still air does. The 4-in-1 plastic boards here are sold on the same promise but are chopping boards first. If thawing is the actual reason for the purchase, the metal is the point.
Plate size against the cut
Contact area is the whole mechanism, so anything hanging over the edge thaws at ordinary room speed. These run from 29.5 x 20.5 cm to 36.5 x 25 cm, which covers two steaks or a pack of mince rather than a whole bird.
Where the meltwater goes
A frozen pack lets go of a surprising amount of liquid. One entry adds a separate drip tray for £3 over the plain version and another has grooves and a silicone border; the rest leave it to the worktop and a tea towel.
Defroster or chopping board
Five of these ten are double-sided boards with a grater and a knife sharpener in the frame. That is a lot of function for £12, but it also means raw meat sitting on a board with a grater in it, which is worth a thought about how the thing gets cleaned.
Thickness and storage
The metal plates here are 2 mm sheets that slide in beside the baking trays; the plastic boards are nearly a centimetre thick and stand up like a chopping board. Neither goes in a drawer, so check the gap you actually have before picking the 36.5 cm size.
What the speed claims mean
Two listings state up to five times faster defrosting and no electricity required. The comparison is against leaving the pack out on the worktop, not against a microwave, and the figure is the manufacturer's own. Read it as a direction of travel rather than as a measurement.
