Ranked by estimated monthly revenue, three of the ten are jar or bottle openers and one is a £279 stand mixer that Amazon has filed in here — the rest split neatly into smooth-edge and traditional top cutters.

What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Smooth edge or top cut

A traditional opener cuts the lid from above and leaves a sharp rim on both the lid and the tin. A smooth-edge opener grips the side seam and lifts the whole top off, leaving no cutting edge — safer with children about, and the lid can be pressed back on. Three listings here are explicitly smooth edge.

02

Turn knob or butterfly key

The knob is where the effort goes. A small butterfly key is fine for one tin and punishing for arthritic fingers; the oversized knobs on the Zulay and the OXO exist for exactly that reason and are the single biggest comfort difference in this category.

03

What holds the lid

Cheap openers drop the cut lid into the tin, which means fishing it out of the tomatoes. Better ones grip the lid magnetically or with pliers-style jaws so it lifts away with the opener. It rarely appears in the title, so look at the product photos.

04

The gear that rusts

The cutting wheel and the toothed drive gear are the parts that fail. Anything sold as dishwasher safe should be, but the gear teeth trap food, and a rusted drive wheel is the usual reason a £6 opener lasts a year. Stainless throughout is worth the extra pound or two.

05

Bench openers are a different animal

The 530 mm Vogue here bolts to a worktop and opens catering tins with one lever pull. It costs £54.60 and is aimed at commercial kitchens — if you open twenty tins a service it pays for itself, and if you open two a week it is absurd.

06

Can opener or jar opener

Three of these ten do not touch tins at all: they grip and twist jar lids or lever bottle caps. They solve a real problem for weak grip, but if you came here for a tin opener they are not substitutes, whatever the subcategory says.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a stand mixer in a can opener ranking?

Because Amazon has filed the Kenwood kMix in this subcategory, and we show the subcategory as it is rather than quietly deleting the odd entries. At £279 it needs only 75 sales a month to out-earn a £6 opener selling 790, which is how it reaches third place.

What does smooth edge actually mean?

The cutter attacks the side seam of the tin instead of the top face. The lid comes away with a rolled, blunt edge and the tin has no sharp rim left behind, so you can reach in without cutting yourself and press the lid back on as a cover. It is slower to line up than a top cutter, and it is the safer choice with children in the kitchen.

Which opener suits weak hands or arthritis?

Look for a large turn knob rather than a small key, cushioned handles that do not need a hard squeeze, and a smooth-edge cut so no sharp lid has to be handled. The Zulay at rank 8 and the Otstar at rank 5 are both marketed for exactly this, and the OXO soft handles at rank 1 are the reason that opener sells as it does.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only products with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. Revenue is price times units, which is why a stand mixer and a £54.60 bench opener appear above openers that sell far more.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
