What matters when buying
Resolution before capacity
Almost every scale here reaches 5 kg, so capacity is not what separates them. The step size is: 1 g is fine for flour and hopeless for 2 g of yeast, 0.1 g suits bread and coffee, 0.01 g is what you want for salt and spice. The dual-platform model at rank 9 solves it by fitting two pans.
Tare, and how many times you can press it
Tare is what lets you build a whole recipe in one bowl instead of washing up five. Check that it can be pressed repeatedly rather than once, and note that every tare eats into the capacity — a 5 kg scale under a 900 g bowl has 4.1 kg left.
Will your bowl fit on it
A 500 g pocket scale is the size of a phone and a mixing bowl simply falls off it. On the flat glass and steel platforms here the bowl usually overhangs, which is fine mechanically but hides the display underneath it.
Reading the display with a bowl on top
This is the practical failure of cheap scales: the numbers sit directly under the pan and you have to bend down and squint sideways. A backlight helps, a raised or angled full-view display helps more, and a phone app sidesteps the problem entirely.
Button cells, AAA or USB
The scales under £10 here run on coin cells that you will replace at the worst moment; the £27 models charge over USB and hold weeks. If a scale lives in a drawer and is used weekly, an auto-off that triggers too fast is more annoying than the battery type.
A nutrition scale is a different purchase
Two of the ten pair with an app and a food database to count calories and nutrients. That is a food diary with a weighing platform attached, and you are paying for the software, not for accuracy. If you only bake, the £6 scale weighs flour exactly as well.
