What matters when buying
Butane or propane
Nine of these refill from a butane cartridge and live in a kitchen drawer. The £61.07 Sondiko is a propane head that threads onto a gas tank, meant for searing outdoors, lighting a fire pit and burning weeds. They are not alternatives to one another, and the propane head cannot be filled from a butane can.
Is the gas in the box
Sondiko, TBTeek and JDHON all state that butane is not included; Green Haven and Bargains-Galore ship with four canisters each. A can of butane costs a few pounds, so add that to the headline price before deciding that the £11.88 torch undercuts the £12.99 one.
Fuel gauge
The S907 and the TBTeek carry a window that shows the butane level. Without it you find out that the tank is empty at the moment you are glazing the last ramekin. It is the single feature that separates the £11.88 Sondiko from the £17.99 one.
Ignition and safety lock
Bargains-Galore names auto ignition; the Sondiko and Green Haven entries name a safety lock. In a kitchen that shares a drawer with children in the house, the lock matters more than the flame size, and it is the one specification worth confirming on the listing itself.
Flame control and anti-flare
Only the MasterClass names an anti-flare flame. Every torch here claims an adjustable flame, but the useful range is what decides whether the same tool can put a thin crust on sugar and a proper crust on a steak — a torch that only runs hot will scorch a custard top.
