What matters when buying
Silicone or wire
Silicone lies flat, grips the table and doubles as a pot holder or a jar opener, but it sits directly under the pan. A wire stand lifts the base a few millimetres so steam escapes rather than condensing between pan and table. Six of this top ten are silicone, two are wire, and they suit different kitchens rather than different budgets.
Size against the pan base
This is the measurement people skip. A 20 cm round pad covers a saucepan and nothing bigger; the 30 x 23 cm rectangles here take a roasting tin or a casserole. A trivet narrower than the base of the pan leaves the rim resting on bare wood, which defeats the point entirely.
