What matters when buying
Fixed disc or changeable plates
Some presses have one permanently fitted disc, others come with fine, medium and coarse plates. A fixed disc cannot be lost and cannot be fitted the wrong way round, which is why the leader here advertises it as a feature. Interchangeable plates only earn their place if you actually want coarse mash as well as fine — gnocchi dough needs the finest one.
Chamber size and how many pressings
This is the number that decides whether ricing four potatoes is a two-minute job or a ten-minute one. The listing at rank 1 quotes a 15 oz chamber; smaller presses take roughly half a potato per squeeze. For a Sunday roast for six, chamber volume matters more than the price difference between any two models here.
Where the leverage comes from
Three mechanisms appear in this top ten. A plain scissor press asks your hand to supply everything; a geared linkage like the FreshForce multiplies the squeeze; the Helix twists instead, moving the work to the shoulder. If grip strength is limited, this is the criterion to buy on and everything else is secondary.
Handle spread at the start
A lever press begins fully open, and on a full-size ricer that spread is wide. Small hands can end up starting the squeeze at the very edge of their grip, which is where the tool slips. Check the length of the arms rather than the closed dimension quoted in the listing.
Steel grade and the hinge
18/8 and 18-8 are the grades quoted here, and the steel itself is rarely what fails. The pivot and the seam where the perforated basket meets the body take the entire load of every squeeze — a press that flexes visibly under a hot potato will keep doing it until it splays.
Cleaning the perforated basket
Potato starch dries inside the holes and sets hard, and a ricer left overnight needs soaking and a brush. Rinsing under a hot tap straight after use takes seconds and is the entire maintenance routine. Dishwasher-safe on the listing means the steel survives, not that the holes come out clear.
