What matters when buying
Balloon, flat or twist
A balloon head beats air into eggs and cream; a flat head gets into the corner of a pan for roux and gravy. One product here twists between the two, and one is a rotary beater — they are three different jobs, not three price points.
Wire count and stiffness
Thin, numerous wires whip cream and whites faster; thick, stiff wires survive heavy batter without splaying. The steel three-packs in this list advertise thick wire, the OXO balloon whisk goes the other way.
Silicone coating or bare steel
Silicone-coated wires are the only safe choice over a non-stick pan, and two of the top three are exactly that. Bare stainless steel is easier to clean and takes any heat, but it will mark a coated pan sooner or later.
Length, not just head size
A 28 cm whisk reaches the bottom of a deep bowl without your knuckles going in; a mini at half that is for a mug, a jar of dressing or one egg. Two minis and one 28 cm model appear here, and they do not replace each other.
Single whisk or three-pack
Three of these listings are sets of 8, 10 and 12 inch whisks for £7 to £13. Check the pack size before comparing prices — otherwise you are weighing one branded whisk against three unbranded ones.
Where the wires meet the handle
That joint is where batter collects and where cheap whisks fail. Sealed or riveted joints in stainless steel wash out; a silicone sleeve moulded straight onto the wire has no gap at all, which matters more than the star rating suggests.
