Shelf price tells you almost nothing here. The £12.99 pack of 750 costs 1.7p a stick; the £9.99 pack of 100 costs 10p. That is a six-fold difference hiding behind two prices that look the same order of magnitude, and one listing does not state its count at all.
Nine centimetres is a cocktail pick. Fifteen to eighteen holds a burger or a buffet skewer together. Twenty-five to thirty is the standard kebab length. Forty centimetres exists so your hand stays away from a fire pit while a marshmallow toasts, and it is the reason the 40 cm pack costs ten times as much per stick.
A round skewer lets the meat spin on the stick every time you turn it, so one side chars and the other stays pale. Flat and paddle skewers hold food still. All three Lanjue entries and the steel KitchenCraft set here are flat; the long bamboo packs are round.
Six stainless skewers cost £3.70, which is roughly what 150 bamboo ones cost. Steel washes and comes back out next summer; bamboo goes in the bin and never needs storing. The birch entry is a third thing again, sold square-sectioned for candy floss rather than for grilling.
Bamboo over direct heat burns through before the food is done unless it is soaked in water first, typically for half an hour. That applies to the 25, 30 and 40 cm packs here. It does not apply to cocktail picks, which never see a flame, or to the steel set.
Chocolate fountains, candy floss, marshmallows, crafts, buffets and kebabs all appear in these titles, sometimes on the same listing. The birch sticks at rank 10 are food grade but sold for candy floss making, and the price reflects that use rather than a barbecue.
Bamboo is cheap, disposable and needs soaking before it goes over direct heat. Steel is reusable, never burns and holds heavier food, but the skewers get very hot and have to be washed and stored. Only one of the ten entries here is steel, and at £3.70 for six it costs about the same as 150 bamboo sticks.

Because you are buying wood by weight and packaging by the box. The 750-stick pack at £12.99 works out at 1.7p per skewer against 2.4p for the same brand's 150-stick pack. If skewers are a once-a-summer purchase the small pack is fine; if you cater, the maths is not close.
