Britain still buys the £2.99 jug.

We analysed the Amazon.co.uk subcategory Measuring Cups & Jugs and kept only products with at least 200 reviews and 4.3 stars. Ranked by estimated monthly revenue, the ten below run from a 60 ml mini jug to a five-litre catering jug — and include a bar jigger and a box of 100 medicine cups, because Amazon files those here too.

OXO Good Grips 1 L Angled Measuring Jug

OXO Good Grips 1 L Angled Measuring Jug

OXO · 1 L · angled scale
8.8/10 ★★★★½
4.6 ★ · 1,224 reviews

The angled internal scale is the whole argument for paying £10.50 instead of £2.99: you read the level looking down while you pour.

  • 1 litre capacity, angled internal scale
  • Read from above rather than at eye level
  • Soft Good Grips handle

ASelected Plastic Measuring Beakers, 7-pack

ASelected Plastic Measuring Beakers, 7-pack

ASelected · 7-pack · beakers
8.5/10 ★★★★½
4.5 ★ · 848 reviews

The £5.49 is for all seven beakers, not for one jug — mixed capacities make this a decanting and mixing set rather than a measuring jug you keep by the hob.

  • Seven jugs in mixed capacities
  • Graduated beaker shape for mixing
  • Listed as heat resistant plastic

Zodiac 86521 Polypropylene Jug, 5 Litre

Zodiac · 5 L · polypropylene
8.8/10 ★★★★½
4.7 ★ · 698 reviews

Five litres is the catering size in this list: right for brine, stock and batch batter, hopeless for 200 ml of milk because the graduations are too coarse.

  • 5 litre capacity, polypropylene body
  • Largest jug in this comparison

What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

Where the scale sits

A printed side scale has to be read at eye level, which means putting the jug down and crouching. An angled internal scale — three of the ten here have one — is read looking down while you are still pouring. It is the single feature that separates a £2.99 jug from a £10.50 one.

02

Glass or plastic

Glass takes boiling stock without warping, does not hold the smell of onion and stays clear after years in the dishwasher. Plastic is a third of the weight, survives being dropped, and is the only sensible choice above two litres. This list has both at almost the same price.

03

Graduation intervals, not just capacity

A five-litre jug is usually marked in 250 ml steps, so it cannot honestly measure 100 ml. Work out the smallest amount you regularly measure and check that the jug carries a line for it — that is why the 60 ml mini jug at rank 10 exists alongside the litre jugs.

04

Millilitres, fluid ounces and pints

British recipes still switch between metric and imperial, so a dual scale saves arithmetic. The Pyrex at rank 6 is the clearest case: it is sold as 500 ml but holds 568 ml to the brim, because 568 ml is one imperial pint. Read which number the line refers to before you trust it.

05

One jug, a set or a bulk box

Three entries here are multipacks: seven beakers for £5.49 and 100 medicine cups for £7.99. The listed price is for the whole pack, so divide before comparing. It also changes what you are buying — seven small beakers are for decanting, not for measuring a litre of stock.

06

Spout, handle and how it sits

A jug that drips down its own side wastes what you just measured, and a narrow base tips when you rest a spoon in it. Look at whether the handle clears the rim enough for a full grip with a wet hand, and whether the jug nests or has to live on its own shelf.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 500 ml Pyrex jug marked 568 ml?

Because 568 ml is one imperial pint, and the jug is filled to the brim at that point rather than to the 500 ml line. British jugs commonly carry both scales for exactly this reason. Always check whether a stated capacity is the working scale or the brim volume — they are not the same number.

Why are medicine cups and a cocktail jigger in a jug ranking?

Because Amazon files them in this subcategory, and our ranking follows the subcategory rather than tidying it up. The 100-pack of 30 ml medicine cups and the 25/50 ml bar jigger genuinely earn their revenue here. It is worth knowing before you assume every entry is a kitchen jug.

Glass or plastic for hot liquids?

Glass for anything near boiling — stock, melted butter, hot sugar syrup — because it neither warps nor takes on flavours. Plastic for cold work, for large volumes and anywhere a dropped jug would be a problem. Above about two litres the weight of glass makes the decision for you.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only products with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. That is why a £2.99 jug selling in thousands leads a list that also contains an £11.95 catering jug.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
