What matters when buying
Where the scale sits
A printed side scale has to be read at eye level, which means putting the jug down and crouching. An angled internal scale — three of the ten here have one — is read looking down while you are still pouring. It is the single feature that separates a £2.99 jug from a £10.50 one.
Glass or plastic
Glass takes boiling stock without warping, does not hold the smell of onion and stays clear after years in the dishwasher. Plastic is a third of the weight, survives being dropped, and is the only sensible choice above two litres. This list has both at almost the same price.
Graduation intervals, not just capacity
A five-litre jug is usually marked in 250 ml steps, so it cannot honestly measure 100 ml. Work out the smallest amount you regularly measure and check that the jug carries a line for it — that is why the 60 ml mini jug at rank 10 exists alongside the litre jugs.
Millilitres, fluid ounces and pints
British recipes still switch between metric and imperial, so a dual scale saves arithmetic. The Pyrex at rank 6 is the clearest case: it is sold as 500 ml but holds 568 ml to the brim, because 568 ml is one imperial pint. Read which number the line refers to before you trust it.
One jug, a set or a bulk box
Three entries here are multipacks: seven beakers for £5.49 and 100 medicine cups for £7.99. The listed price is for the whole pack, so divide before comparing. It also changes what you are buying — seven small beakers are for decanting, not for measuring a litre of stock.
Spout, handle and how it sits
A jug that drips down its own side wastes what you just measured, and a narrow base tips when you rest a spoon in it. Look at whether the handle clears the rim enough for a full grip with a wet hand, and whether the jug nests or has to live on its own shelf.
