What matters when buying
Teeth, not a burr
A pocket grinder shreds dry leaf between two sets of blunt teeth. It is not a mill: peppercorns, cinnamon bark and whole nutmeg are far harder than what those teeth are cut for, and eight of the ten listings here work this way.
How many layers
Two layers grind and stop. Four layers add a mesh screen and a second chamber underneath that catches the finest dust instead of leaving it packed in the teeth. Rank 10 is rank 3 with those extra parts, for about £3 more.
Zinc alloy, aluminium or plastic
Zinc alloy is the heavy option and holds a coarse thread well. Aluminium is lighter and easier to anodise, which is why every coloured grinder in this list is aluminium. The one plastic body here costs about the same as the cheap metal ones.
Diameter is capacity
The sizes here run from 5 cm to 2.5 inches, and that decides how much goes in per fill. A 5 cm grinder is a single-portion tool; if you want to load it once and work through a whole batch, buy the wider body.
The lid and the thread
The lid is the part that fails first. A magnet holds the top down while you twist and stops it lifting off mid-turn, and a clean, coarse thread on the middle section is what keeps the halves from binding once resin and oils build up.
If you actually want a mill
Only ranks 4 and 5 are table mills with an adjustable mechanism for salt, pepper and hard spice. Amazon files them here as well as under Pepper Mills and Salt Mills, and the two of them together cost more than the eight grinders combined.
