What matters when buying
Lever press or hand squeezer
A countertop lever press does a bag of oranges without tiring your hands, but it weighs up to six kilos and never goes in a cupboard. A handheld squeezer costs a tenth as much and lives in a drawer, at the price of one fruit per squeeze and real effort by the fifth lemon. That single decision separates the £70 half of this list from the £12 half.
Cup size against your fruit
A lime squeezer will crush a lime beautifully and refuse an orange. The 2-in-1 at rank 3 solves it with nested bowls; the big presses take oranges and, in one case, pomegranates. Check the quoted bowl diameter against what you actually juice rather than assuming citrus is citrus.
Pips, pulp and the strainer
Handheld squeezers push juice through perforations that hold most pips back but let fine pulp through. The glass reamer here works the other way round: a moat collects the juice and a raised ridge traps the seeds, so you decant rather than filter. If you want juice with no pulp at all, look for a listing that names a separate stainless strainer.
Weight, footprint and where it lives
Six kilos of cast iron is a permanent resident of the worktop, and it needs the depth for the handle to swing without hitting a wall cupboard. Measure the arc, not the base. At the other end, one juicer in this list folds flat specifically so it takes no fixed space at all.
Coating, acid and washing up
Citrus juice is acidic and finds every chip in a painted or enamelled cast-iron press, so those are wipe-and-dry tools rather than dishwasher items. Glass and stainless steel do not care. Aluminium handheld squeezers are the ones to rinse immediately, because juice left sitting in the bowl dulls the finish.
Colour changes the price, and so does the week
