What matters when buying
The stem, not the mouth
The size quoted in these titles is the wide end. What decides whether the funnel is usable is the spout: a 122 mm mouth is no help if the stem will not drop into a 28 mm bottle neck. That is exactly why the plastic kits here are sold in graded sets rather than one size.
Plastic set or stainless steel
Plastic is the cheap way to cover four sizes at once and is fine for water, vinegar and dry goods. Steel costs more per funnel but handles hot stock and jam, and does not hold the smell of the oil you poured through it last month.
Mesh strainer or plain cone
Three entries here include a removable mesh insert, and that is the feature that turns a funnel into a filter — straining stock, decanting wine off its sediment, keeping pips out of juice. Between two otherwise identical steel cones it is the only difference worth paying for.
Wide mouth for jars
A canning or jam funnel is short and wide so it sits inside the mouth of a Kilner jar and keeps the rim clean enough to seal. It is a preserving tool, not a bottling one, and only one entry in this top ten is built that way.
Air escape when pouring thick liquids
A funnel that seals tightly against a bottle neck traps the air below it, and syrup or oil then stops and burps back at you. None of these titles mention a vent rib or notch on the stem, so expect to lift the funnel slightly every few seconds when the liquid is thick.
How the set stores
Funnels nest badly and swallow drawer space. Two solutions appear here: clip-on holders that keep a set together and a ring on the rim for a hook. Loose in a drawer, the fine mesh inserts are the parts that go missing first.
