What matters when buying
Disc or hob screen
The two formats here do different jobs. A mesh disc rests on the pan and lets steam out while holding fat back; a folding guard stands on the worktop and protects the wall and the hob surround. Four of these ten are the standing type, so read past the word screen before you buy.
Diameter against your pan
A screen has to overlap the rim, not drop inside it. The single discs here are 13 inch (33 cm), which suits a large frying pan; the multi packs add 10 and 11.4 inch for milk pans and small skillets. Measure across the top edge of the pan, not the base.
Woven mesh or perforated sheet
Mesh is finer and traps more of the spatter; a perforated sheet is stiffer and quicker to scrub. Both appear here under the same product name — the Apidgrowth listings state perforated, the Snowyee and set listings state mesh — and the wording is the only way to tell them apart.
The handle, and how it stores
A fixed handle keeps your hand away from the pan but makes the screen awkward in a drawer. One entry here specifically names a fold-flat knob, which is the difference between hanging it on a hook and stacking it flat.
Sets or a single disc
Half of this top ten is a multi pack. £12.99 for three sizes is a different proposition from £8.49 for one 13 inch screen, and it only pays if you genuinely cook in three pan sizes — otherwise you are storing two discs you never reach for.
Cleaning after fat
Fat sets in the mesh, and a screen that is a chore to clean is a screen you stop using. Stainless steel is the only material in this ranking, so what actually varies is how fine the holes are: the finer the mesh, the more it catches and the longer it takes to get clean again.
