What matters when buying

Six criteria
01

What stands between blade and thumb

A mandoline blade is sharper than most kitchen knives and it does not stop at the vegetable. Look for a food holder that actually grips the last third of a potato, and note that one listing here ships cut-resistant gloves in the box. If the guard is uncomfortable you will stop using it, which is exactly how the accidents happen.

02

Chopper box or open mandoline

A chopper box presses food down through a fixed grid into a container and produces dice; an open mandoline slides the food across a single blade and produces slices. Seven of the ten here are one or the other, and they are not substitutes — the box is faster for onions, the mandoline is the only one that gives you paper-thin potato.

03

Thickness setting, not just blades

Blade count sells the box, but the dial does the work. A stepless thickness adjuster lets you go from 1 mm crisps to 5 mm gratin on the same blade, while a set of fixed inserts gives you whatever thicknesses the manufacturer chose. Check which of the two you are buying before counting blades.

04

Where the food ends up

Handheld mandolines drop everything onto the board or into a bowl you hold underneath; chopper boxes catch it in a lidded container that doubles as fridge storage. If you prep the night before, the container matters more than the blade set.

05

Y-peeler or swivel peeler

The one peeler in this ranking is a Y-shape: you pull it across the potato, taking a wide strip with each stroke. A swivel peeler runs along the length instead and suits carrots and long roots. At £3.99 a peeler is a consumable — a blunt one wastes more potato in a month than the tool costs.

06

Blade storage and washing up

Loose spare blades in a drawer are the second most common way people cut themselves in this category. Boxes with a built-in blade caddy solve it; flat mandolines with three separate inserts do not. And every blade here needs drying rather than sitting wet, whatever the dishwasher symbol claims.

Frequently asked questions

Mandoline or vegetable chopper — what is the difference?

A mandoline gives you even slices of any thickness, including the very thin ones a knife cannot manage. A chopper pushes food through a fixed grid, so it only makes cubes and batons of one size, but it does it in one movement and catches everything in a container. The two Fullstar boxes at ranks 1 and 5 combine both functions in a single body, which is a large part of why they lead the category.

Why does a £3.99 peeler rank below a £25 chopper?

Because the order comes from revenue, not units. The Leaflai peeler sells 2,580 pieces a month against 2,741 for the chopper at rank 1, so the two are almost level on volume — but at £3.99 against £24.99 the peeler earns a fifth as much. If you want the most commonly bought item rather than the biggest seller by value, read the unit figures next to each entry.

How is this different from the spiralizers and graters category?

Amazon runs two overlapping nodes. This one is dominated by mandolines, chopper boxes and peelers — tools where the food passes a fixed blade. The spiralizer and grater node collects rasps, box graters, rotary drums and spiral cutters, where the blade or drum moves against the food. Anything that grates rather than slices is worth comparing there instead.

How was this ranking created?

The products are ordered by estimated monthly revenue per ASIN, not by star rating and not by bestseller rank. Only products with at least 200 reviews and an average of 4.3 stars were included. Note that ranks 3 and 10 are the same SupMaKin slicer in two colourways with identical review counts — we show the listings as Amazon publishes them rather than merging them.

How the score is calculated — and what it is not

The score is not our own hands-on test. It is calculated transparently from public Amazon data: 75% from the average star rating and 25% from the number of reviews, weighted logarithmically. The ranking order itself comes from estimated monthly revenue per ASIN. Prices, ratings and review counts were retrieved from Amazon.co.uk on 22 July 2026 and can change at any time.
