What matters when buying
Trigger or plain dipper
A sprung trigger sweeps the bowl and drops a clean ball, which is why it dominates the cheap end of this list. A one-piece dipper has nothing to seize up or snap, and it is what the two most expensive scoops here are. Six of these ten have a trigger, four do not.
Bowl size in centimetres
The sizes stated here are 4, 5, 6 and 6.3 cm, and that number is your portion. A 6 cm bowl is a generous single scoop or one large cookie; 4 cm is a child's portion, a truffle or a melon ball. Buying by picture rather than by centimetre is the usual mistake.
The liquid-filled handle
One scoop in this top ten has a sealed fluid inside the handle and is sold on heat conduction from your hand into the head. It is a different design philosophy from a trigger, it costs £23.57 here, and it is the reason that model has been in parlours for decades.
Aluminium against stainless steel
Aluminium is lighter and conducts heat readily, which is why the one-piece dippers here use it. Stainless is heavier, takes a dishwasher without discolouring and is what every trigger model in this list is made from.
Cleaning a sprung mechanism
The sweep blade on a trigger scoop runs in a slot, and dairy dries in slots. If it is not going in the dishwasher it needs rinsing straight after use rather than at the end of the evening — a plain dipper has no such gap.
What else it will end up doing
Almost every listing here also sells the scoop for cookie dough, mashed potato, meatballs or melon balls. If that is the plan, the bowl size and how cleanly the trigger releases stiff dough matter more than anything ice-cream specific.
