What matters when buying
Glass, silicone, bamboo or steel
Toughened glass takes six of these ten places: rigid, wipeable, and doubling as a chopping surface. Silicone is the flexible alternative that rolls away and grips the counter by itself. Bamboo and stainless steel appear once each and answer different questions — covering a hob, and surviving a commercial kitchen.
Will you cut on it?
A glass saver will happily take a knife, but the knife loses. If you chop daily, treat glass as a landing pad for hot pans and use a wooden board for the cutting. Silicone is the opposite: kind to blades, but it scores and marks, so it is a protector rather than a cutting surface.
Size against the space you have
The glass standard here is 40 x 30 cm, enough for a casserole dish or a chopping station beside the hob. The smallest board at 30 x 20 cm covers half that area for the same money, and the silicone sheets at 60 x 40 cm cover a whole working run. Measure the free stretch of worktop first.
Grip, feet and rattle
Glass on a granite or laminate worktop slides and rattles unless it is footed. Only one listing here names non-slip rubber feet, and the silicone mats grip by their nature. If the board is going next to the hob, that detail matters more than the pattern printed on it.
Nobody states a temperature
Every entry here calls itself heat resistant or heat-proof, and not one gives a figure in degrees. Toughened glass and silicone both handle a pan straight off the ring in normal use, but with no stated limit you should treat all of these as protection from a hot dish rather than from a burning one.
You are buying the print
Two brands here list 115 and 88 designs of what is otherwise the same glass panel, and the price range for a comparable board runs from £9.99 to £19.99. If the saver stays out on the worktop, the design is a fair reason to pay more — just be clear that is what the difference buys.
