Toughened glass takes six of these ten places: rigid, wipeable, and doubling as a chopping surface. Silicone is the flexible alternative that rolls away and grips the counter by itself. Bamboo and stainless steel appear once each and answer different questions — covering a hob, and surviving a commercial kitchen.
A glass saver will happily take a knife, but the knife loses. If you chop daily, treat glass as a landing pad for hot pans and use a wooden board for the cutting. Silicone is the opposite: kind to blades, but it scores and marks, so it is a protector rather than a cutting surface.
